RACE TOGETHER

RACE TOGETHER is an initiative from Starbucks and USA TODAY to stimulate conversation, compassion and action around race in America. Over the next year they plan to do just that, using all of their strengths in publishing and in stores across America. RACE TOGETHER is not a solution, but it is an opportunity to begin to re-examine how we can create a more empathetic and inclusive society — one conversation at a time.

The link below provides materials for Starbucks and USA Today that can be used in conducting Race Dialogues.

Starbucks Encourages Baristas to Discuss Race Relations with Customers

CEO Howard Schultz is encouraging his employees to bring up the issue of race with customers. Starbucks published a full page ad in the New York Times — a stark, black, page with a tiny caption “Shall We Overcome?” in the middle, and the words “RaceTogether” with the company logo, on the bottom right. The ad, along with a similar one in USA Today, is part of an initiative launched by the coffee store chain to stimulate conversation and debate about race in America by getting employees to engage with customers about the subject.
